Google is planning an Android games console and smartwatch

INTERNET GIANT Google apparently is planning to build a games console and a smartwatch.

Sources have told the Wall Street Journal that the firm is planning to build an Android based games console and some sort of smartwatch.

These would be good moves. Google's Android mobile operating system is already on games consoles Gamestick and Ouya, so an inhouse alternative makes a lot of sense.

As far as wrist adornments go, the firm apparently is planning to play catch-upwith the Pebble Smartwatch, Sony's smart watch and the rumoured Apple iWatch.

Google has not commented on this, either to The INQUIRER or the Wall Street Journal. We can speculate about whether it's likely, however, and have decided that it seems very likely indeed.

Google has watched the progress of hardware like the Ouya, according to the WSJ, and presumably that has raised questions about how much money there is in the gaming market.

The firm's Android mobile operating system appears on the $150 Pebble Smartwatch and on the two sub-£100 games consoles.

The Ouya games console is out now, and is listed on Amazon. Amazon UK is offering a three week delivery turnaround, but told us that it has stock available.

The Ouya, Gamestick and Pebble Smartwatch all began as projects at the crowdfunding Kickstarter website, but Google has far more resources it can bring to bear if it decides to enter a market. It also has played the catch-up game well before, and was late to the party but very successful with its Android smartphones.
